Ultimately, the writers weren’t doing it for me, which draws me to the point of this article… Jonathan Hickman!Īfter digging through my stack of dusty old graphic novels, I noticed an association between my collection and similar writers. But, many of the reasons I jumped ship to Marvel years ago now from the other “company” was because the characters I adored just didn’t have great stories anymore. Sure, there are characters I love like the next person. Meaning, I find that I’m very much Type 2. However, in the realm of comics, I find myself more drawn to good stories which in turn is directly related to the writer. Sorry if that offends any of my Twitter followers exponentially but there is no changing that family dynamic. Now, in terms of the sporting world, I bleed Green… Kelly Green to be exact! I’m a diehard Philadelphia Eagles fan. So in this example using our sports analogy, it would be the equivalent of following a player like Peyton Manning, Michael Jordan, Lebron James, or even Tom Brady and NOT the team they played originally or for most of their career. Type 2: They read everything from the writer regardless of the character. Think of it like loving a football team even if your favorite player moves on to greener pastures. Type 1: They read all about the character they adore regardless of the writer.
And during this time, what I’ve grown to realize as I meander through my old back issues and trades is that there are two types of comic readers. With what appears to be a shutdown of new Marvel titles for at least two weeks, this reviewer has used the opportunity to catch up on some old titles, classic trades, and some graphic novels that have been collecting dust for God knows how long.
