"Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" gives me everything that I look for in a story. These illustrations and more are also available in "The Art of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind", with bonus commentary from Miyazaki himself. There's also a ton of bonus art and a poster. To preserve the artwork, the books are read in Japanese order from right to left, and the sound effects are left untranslated - there's a guide at the back which translates them into English, but the drawings provide enough context to tell what's happening. This box set compiles all seven volumes into two hardcover books, and prints them in a larger size, all the better for the reader to take in Miyazaki's artwork. I was completely engrossed in the plot and the character development, and every step of the way I was excited to see what would happen next. They drew me into the story, which moves along at a brisk and steady pace. The characters are engaging, well-developed, layered and memorable.

Of course, a setting like this would be completely wasted without a great cast of characters to inhabit it, and Nausicaä delivers in spades. Reading this manga was like reading an epic fantasy novel, its world seems to spring from the pages and come to life. The monsters, the plants, the technology and the post-apocalyptic landscapes are exquisitely rendered and highly immersive. Nausicaä is a tour de force of world building. This says a lot, considering the movie was excellent in its own right! However, as is typical of adaptations, much was lost in the translation of book to film: the movie only covers two out of the seven books of this epic saga. Those who haven't read the manga write off Nausicaä as good, but not great this is unfortunate, and a typical case of an inferior movie adaptation overshadowing the original work. Though many may sing the praises of "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke", they fall short of its greatness.

"Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä", or "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind", is without a doubt Hiyao Miyazaki's greatest work.
